TRIGENICS: MYONEURAL MEDICINE

INTRODUCTION

Trigenics is a sensorimotor and energetic restoration system.

Trigenics Myoneural Medicine incorporates a neurologically-based, multimodal methodology for local or full-body assessment and treatment.  Treatment procedures and outcome are based upon functional neurology. Trigenics® is not a soft tissue treatment technique although the result of treatment using Trigenics® is often the correction of many soft tissue conditions. From a manual medicine perspective, soft tissue myofascial techniques and osseous manipulation are still often needed to treat aberrant histology and arthrokinetic osteology. In some cases, Trigenics works as a stand-alone system of care although it is often used as an integral and critical component in a multidisciplinary approach to condition correction. All other treatment methodologies including soft tissue techniques and spinal adjusting are enhanced with the initial inclusion of Trigenics as a team player in complete care.

Trigenics myoneural procedures involve the synergistic, simultaneous application of 3 main treatment techniques/modalities for a summative neurological effect. These are: 1) Reflex Neurology 2) Mechanoreceptor Manipulation and 3) Cerebropulmonary Biofeedback. “It’s mode of action works on the basis of integrating neurological convergence projection from both segmental (PNS) and suprasegmental (CNS) pathways. The multimodal stimulation approach utilized in Trigenics® is consistent with the principles of neuroplasticity and enhanced corticoneural reorganization of the somatosensory and sensorimotor systems.”

Trigenics® is used on a very wide variety of patients including infants and geriatrics and it can be used to treat many conditions. In addition to being used to accelerate rehabilitation and for structural correction, Trigenics can be used as an alternative no-force manipulation. Specific Trigenics® Sports Power Augmentation treatments clinically increase athletic power and performance to greater than normal levels. Other neurological applications can be used to treat restrictive capsular and bursal conditions such as “frozen shoulder.” Self Trigenics® Myoneural Exercises have also been developed to enhance patient recovery with neurologically enhanced exercise.

Trigenics is often referred to as the “missing link” in neuromusculoskeletal care. In strictly using osseous manipulation to treat the vertebral subluxation complex, not correcting aberrant neurologic input (dysafferentation) to the muscular holding elements will lead to the frustrating outcome of chronic, recurring intervertebral dyskinesia. In treating musculoskeletal conditions, non-treatment of aberrant neural innervation and compensatory tone imbalances (short/weak muscles) will lead to the frustrating outcome of incomplete strength rehabilitation and functional restoration. Trigenics provides the solution by firstly correcting aberrant proprioceptive neurology to provide for functional restoration of afferent and efferent neural impulses. Treatment of aberrant histology (adhesions) can then subsequently be addressed using soft tissue myofascial techniques with aberrant arthrokinetics addressed through osseous manipulation procedures

Trigenics can provide you with the tools to be an elite innovator in the vanguard of providing complete, leading edge, highly effective care by using a truly neurological, integrative local and global approach to core correction.

HISTORY

In the early nineteen nineties Canadian-Estonian Chiropractor, Dr Allan Oolo Austin discovered that a simultaneous judicious combination of specifically applied breath/visualization and soft tissue work with accentuated bombardment of neurological reflexes, could resolve a wide range of conditions. This has been systematized into a comprehensive and precise assessment and treatment system, which, because it involves three major elements, is called “Trigenics.”

TRIGENICS THEORY

A PAIN PERSPECTIVE

Muscle pain is a direct cause or a contributing factor in a large proportion of the pain syndromes patients bring practitioners.  Sometimes the cause is intrinsic, in the muscle itself.  Sometimes the cause of pain may be extrinsic.  Problems in joints cause painful muscle spasms.  Interestingly, influenza and other infectious diseases can induce muscle pain.  Furthermore, problems in muscles can cause referred pain at remote locations.  Tight trapezius and upper thoracic spinal muscles are found in association with most headaches. Gradual premature osseous deterioration is much more evident from sedentary, static muscular loading and cumulative strain work conditions as well as from chronic structural deficits and postural/musculoskeletal asymmetries associated with injury or aging. The prescription of “pain-killers” and “muscle relaxants” is rarely a satisfactory answer, and mechanically-based soft tissue technique methodologies are, usually, of only superficial and temporary benefit.

The importance of having developed an advanced form of manual medicine for muscle pain and other neuromusculoskeletal dysfunctions becomes particularly apparent in the context of a “hot news item” that was circulating in the spring of 2001 when television and newspapers enthusiastically reported a research claim that injecting “botox”, or botulin toxin (which paralyse the myoneural junctions) into spasmed low back muscles. The research findings reported that the botox injections alleviated low back pain in over 60% of chronic low back pain sufferers. This finding is to claim and indicates, that if one can reduce or alleviate the muscle spasm, one will reduce or alleviate the pain. Trigenics® affords us a neurologically based, safe, simple, dramatically effective, non-invasive method of near-instantly reducing or alleviating muscle spasm and therefore pain.

It is noted that during Trigenics® treatments, the patients’ pain threshold increases significantly. Patients commonly report that pain from pressure applied, which would normally have been quite perceptible, is considerably less during application of Trigenics® procedures. This is hypothesised to be due to the summative bombardment of mechanoreceptors during Trigenics application causing a gating effect on nociceptive data, which must travel through thinner, slower neurons.

These are only 2 of many proposed reasons for the significant decrease in pain during and after Trigenics® treatments noted by Trigenics patients.

From a restoration of function perspective, Trigenics® clinically increases muscle strength or length significantly in dysafferent weak or short muscles. There also appears to be an immediate anti-inflammatory effect. In addition, there is indication that repetitive Trigenics® treatments may have a cumulative hypertrophic or hyperplastic effect on muscle causing an increase in size and power independent of other forms of exercise. It is hypothesised that, should this prove true, the extrinsic manipulative load applied to the muscle during activity (*“PDM”) may cause the brain to register an additional load which does not normally exist in resisted contraction. The effect of this would cause the secretion of neurochemicals which mediate muscular hypertrophy in response to imposed stress.

The three components of Trigenics

The name “Trigenics” refers to the fact that the therapy is a highly synergistic interplay of three components:

The first, which is termed “Neurogenics”, is the use of incrementally resisted movement to elicit a neuromyogenic response via facilitation and augmentation of myoneural reflexes. Trigenics® employs optimizing a part of the myotatic reflex, which engages “reciprocal innervation”, and it also conversely utilizes the inverse myotatic reflex

Along with these reflexes, Trigenics® employs a muscle manipulation procedure called "Proprioceptive Distorsional Myoneural Manipulation" or "PDM", which directly stimulates  the mecanoreceptors in a responsive patient/Trigenist interface involving a dynamic, manual-contact distortion of the muscle fibers. Accurate application of PDM during engagement of local myoneural reflexes (and neurocerebral pathways) allows for much greater penetration and results than would otherwise be possible with the more traditional, mechanically based manual techniques.

Thirdly, the interaction of neurogenics and myo genics is greatly enhanced by the use of specific concentrative respiratory and auto-suggestive techniques.  This final arm of Trigenics® is termed “Autogenics.

Synergy

When things work in combination better than the simple sum of the parts, we call this enhanced effect “synergy.”  Prime examples of synergy are herbal formulas (where the herbs in combination work better than we would expect) and Trigenics.

Synergy, Gestalt, Dialectics

To understand why the three component parts of Trigenics® work so well together we must look at “systems concepts”, “complexity theory”, and the phenomenon of “synergy.”

The world, the universe, is a complex thing. In order to simplify it Science uses a strategy of reductionism, considering aspects in isolation, in order to make complexity comprehensible. But reductionism is always only an approximation because the world simply is so complex. When we look at things more fully we find they are patterns imbedded in patterns. In the 1930s a group of psychologist (including the legendary Fritz Perls) paid homage to this fact by talking of "gestalt": i.e. pattern, objects and fields. So things are patterns, gestalts, and are imbedded in their interconnections and, when things interact, they get complex really quickly. Consider the "three body problem.” In Newtonian physics if we know the relative positions and movements of two bodies, two orbiting bodies, mathematicians can calculate their subsequent position where they will be at any time until eternity, but when we introduce a third body the computation becomes more and more complex so fast that we can not calculate how the three bodies will interact. This is the "three body problem" and it so excised nineteenth century thinkers that the King of Sweden offered a prize to whomever would solve this "three body problem.” The French mathematician, Poincaré, won the prize by demonstrating mathematically that the problem cannot be solved.

Things get complex so darn fast. This is the essence of Hegelian "dialectic" which says "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts": which is to say, when we are considering a system of interacting things we can’t just add them because they are more than their sum.  The system is also the interaction of its parts. Which brings us to "non-linear systems.” A "linear system" is one that just adds up like one and one is two and another is three.

It’s a "linear" system because when you plot it as a graph you get a straight line. Ripples in a pond sum linearly, and we get "interference patterns.” However, when things interact, when A effects B and B in turn affects A, they do not sum in a linear fashion. Most events in the actual world are "interactions" - things effecting one another - and when things interact their interaction are "non-linear"; they are not simple sums. Here we will simply note that, one, in the real world many things interact and therefore tend to be non-linear, which makes the world very complex because, two, the interaction of non-linear systems are too complex to calculate.

So where does "synergy" fit into Trigenics? With Trigenics® three techniques are employed at once to restore, modify or amplify muscle tone, accelerate healing and reduce or eliminate pain. Synergy comes into it because, in skilled hands, it is amazingly effective: more effective than we would expect from a simply summing the three techniques. This type of dialectic, this type of non-linear interaction, where the outcome is larger then the input, we call "synergy.” (Another place we typically see synergies is in herbal formulas. When we carefully combine herbs we get results that are many times more efficacious then might be expected. In herbology the Chinese and the western doctors agree: "the formula is the thing.”) There is another, simpler, aspect to apparent synergies. In complex systems all component parts may be necessary to affect the outcome. Start striping a car of its parts or a body of its organs, and it simply stops working.

In other words, we need all the parts of the Trigenics treatment methodology working in cumulative unison for the complex of Trigenics® to function in its true augmentative synergistic fashion.

For this reason, it requires considerable study and skill to properly learn how to apply this highly beneficial and unique type of manual medicine.
